The narrator is an officer, so you might say it's an Officer's story. But the dry and often dark humor, the brutal truth written into the work, and the detail with which situations are described, all make it read like a narrative from someone who has really been there, done that. To me, that makes it a soldier's story, regardless of rank. 'Chris' is an infantry officer of the highest order, the kind who feels fear as we all did, but stuffs it down into his rucksack and drives on. I come from the reconnaissance world (light Cavalry), not unlike the world of an infantryman, and have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a combat veteran, I can attest that while the book is sold as 'fiction,' it is more true than many of the non-fiction books I have read about the wars in Southwest Asia. Moving episodes like Chris' interactions with a little girl on an airplane where he is the only soldier in uniform, and reactions to the death and destruction of combat, tell me that Justin Burgess has also 'been there, done that.' I am proud to identify with this man (the author, the narrator), and the whole warrior caste of our nation. I finished this book on 11/11/12, Veterans Day, and am not too proud to say it brought me tears on more than one occasion. If you have served, you can probably take it or leave it -- because we've lived this story, in so many words. But I would highly recommend this work to family members who wish to better understand the things we Veterans are seldom able to find the words to explain. Aside from a few editorial issues (and there are several in the Kindle edition), 'Another Day in Paradise' is war fiction of the best kind: emotionally TRUE, if not 100% factual. I cannot endorse the book enough. Mr. Burgess, I commend your work. Thank you for telling this story. I'd rate this one right up there with classics like The Things They Carried and other high fiction of the Vietnam war. It is the single-best piece I have found which is rooted in the Afghan campaign.Tags : Another Day in Paradise - Kindle edition by Justin Burgess. Another Day in Paradise edition by Justin Burgess Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Did you grow up reading the first person non-fictional and fictional accounts of military enlisted and officers from the Vietnam War? Did you enjoy these books for the most part? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you will most likely enjoy Another Day in Paradise. Mr. Burgess provides enough detail and feeling to create some empathy for the character. The book does project the aura of "been there, done that" that this genre is intended to invoke. Overall the book was a fast read, enjoyable in its detail, and thought provoking in concern to certain rules of engagement. I recommend it.
Justin does an incredible job of painting a picture for the reader. The sights, smells, and sounds of combat in Afghanistan come alive as the myriad emotions of the narrator become the reader's own emotions. Don't but this book if you dont have a block of several hours to sit and enjoy it, because if you put it down part way through it'll be all you're thinking about until you're able to pick it up again.
Great story. Lousy command of the English language. We're talking every aspect spelling, grammar, punctuation, improper use of words, etc. Did I mention that the story was great?
I laughed, I cried, I prayed. I'm in awe with all that you and others in the military do. This book have me a whole new understanding of what our men have been going through for too long.
The author doesn't spend a lot of time describing the scenery or giving too many details about each character, instead letting the actions of the characters and dialogue carry the story. Whether or not that's a good thing depends on your particular reading style. Not too much is left open for interpretation as the protagonists relays their thoughts and feelings almost precisely. A few spelling and grammar errors were found which sometimes takes you away from the flow of the story to re-read the passage and see what the author meant.
I was going through my , clearing out old stuff and sorting the remainder into collections, when I saw "Another Day in Paradise" listed all by its lonesome. I figured it to be some impulse purchase (it was), and after skimming the first page or so I'd know where to shunt it off to. By page two, I was hooked, and I haven't been able to put it down for more than an hour.
Justin Burgess has written an exceptional, realistic, emotionally-affecting novel. As I am a former combat arms platoon leader, staff officer and company commander (Cold War era), Burgess's descriptions of his narrator's life rang true to me 100% of the time. While I only served in Iraq, not Afghanistan, and not as a combat arms officer, I still saw complete, stark truth in his depictions of the warriors and the "Fobbits". Finally, having been connected to Fort Lewis, Washington almost continuously since 1980, I have to say that Jason Burgess nailed the scenes on and off post. Many of the people living in our area who are not connected to the military have absolutely no idea that there's a simmering volcano of anger, pain, relief, and confusion on the part of those deploying and redeploying to the war, or preparing for the next deployment, while trying to maintain a veneer of civility for the sake of the civilian populace.
This novel reads like a memoir, which is one of its strengths. Justin Burgess didn't pull any of his punches, nor does his (presumably) alter-ego, CPT Chris Braddock. For this reason, "Another Day in Paradise" may very well put-off readers who are unfamiliar with the military culture, and assume that Army officers are merely clean-cut drones from cookie-cutter suburban backgrounds, remaining wholly unaffected by what they've seen and done over the past decade of war. If you happen to fit in that demographic, this will probably be a very uncomfortable read. But if you are sincerely interested in gaining a bit of perception about this other world, you will be richly rewarded by this novel's honesty and terrible beauty.
As for me, if I happen to run into Justin Burgess on post sometime, I will be honored to shake his hand and buy him a drink...he's more than earned it with this novel.
