Erin Knightley officially has a spot on my auto-buy list. Her books are delightful, fluffy fun and it is a nice reprieve to open the pages of her books and know I am guaranteed a sweet romance and not an obsession with lust (aka how often a hero happens to get an erection when around the heroine...I swear, for some authors, I think many of the heroes have a medical condition!)Anyways, this story is a classic enemies to lovers story, with the hero being stuffy and proper and the heroine being free-spirited, world traveled, and opinionated as hell. In many ways, this story had a flavor of Pride and Prejudice. These characters were helplessly drawn to each other in ways they couldn't understand. Their lives were so different, the Duke is tied to everything English, and May's heart resists England in favor of the sea faring life she used to have with her tradesman father. There were times when I wondered how the two would ever find common ground. Just like Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy, May and William drew premature conclusions about each other and slowly discovered new things that made them realized perhaps they were wrong.
There are several romantic scenes and I thought that William, though stubborn, was honorable and likeable. May was more difficult to like because of her pride and unwillingness to change her mind, but I think her loyal nature and unpredictability are exactly what the Duke needed. Despite the antagonistic beginning, I do believe they would be happy together. The secondary characters are delightful and include William's young stepsiblings, May's friends Sophie and Charity, and William's old friend Dering (who is the hero of the last book in this series).
Overall, this was a pleasant read and some of the cursing and name-calling in it made me smile.

The Duke Can Go to the Devil A Prelude to a Kiss Novel Erin Knightley 9780451473653 Books Reviews
What happens when a stuffy, overly disciplined Duke meets a free spirited miss? They fall in love of course. But, not before they go through their share of misunderstandings and confusion. William, the Duke of Radcliffe tries to lead an upright, non-scandalous life. May Bedford, grew up overseas and is used to doing what she wants without much conrtol over her actions. it's a case of opposites drive each other crazy before finally attracting.
This book is another great adventure by the author. The characters are well written and well rounded. As we get to know William and May better we see that they are not the one dimensional characters that they could have been but have both good and weak points to their personalities.
This is the third of Ms Knightly's Prelude to a Kiss series, involving three girls who meet at a musical competition in Bath. They join together to form an unusual trio Piano, oboe and zither. They also, just incidentally, find husbands. In this, May, who has lived all her life in the Far East and aboard her father's ship, is stuck in Bath with a stodgy aunt, who disapproves of everything May does, wears or says. The duke appears as hidebound as her aunt at first. The fun of the story is the gradual thawing of the duke, and the couple's realization that they love one another. As they begin to come together, it develops that May's father is losing his job as ship's captain with the East India Company, and that the duke has been partly responsible. How they get back together I will leave to you. All in all, a fun read, and with lots of real history thrown in.
In my continued quest to find clean historical romance writers (good ones are hard to find!) I picked up another book in Erin Knightley's Prelude to a Kiss series. I'll definitely be adding Ms. Knightley to my list of TBR authors.
Heroine - Adorable. Although, truth be told, I liked Sophie from The Earl I Adore slightly better. That said, May's character was wonderful. She was as sharp and spunky a heroine as you will find in a historical romance, and those looking for strong female leads will absolutely love her.
Hero - Also very lovable. Came across as more multi-dimensional than Evan in The Earl I Adore - although he wasn't bad! The duke's motivations for acting like a pompous ass were believable, and his motivations for overcoming those attitudes were also believable.
Plot - It's a Regency romance so naturally, it's all about the romance, and that positively sizzles. Ms. Knightley did mention Napoleon once so that helped ground it in time. Personally, I love having more history, not just period-specific social mores, to help me get my bearings, but I suspect most Regency readers would rather focus on the social/romance elements.
If I were to come up with any negatives, it is that the dialogue does have a slightly modern feel. So do some of the situations. If you love romance for the romance, it's not so obtrusive that it will get in the way of your enjoyment. If you're a stickler for the time period, you'd be better off reading Jane Eyre or Pride and Prejudice for the umpteenth time.
I loved this story of a feisty, carefree, heroine and prudent, rule-following hero! I laughed so hard, so many times; it was so refreshing every time May's common sense clashed with "proper" societal behaviors - and the Duke's reactions and thoughts about her - especially when he first heard her play her instrument! You'll love this light-hearted, fast paced story of a proper English Duke who just simply cannot understand why he's falling for a lady who is the exact opposite of the "biddable" proper wife he is seeking to be his Duchess. I loved how Erin brought out a whole other side of him at his estate; it brought a lot of depth to a character who seemed one-dimensional and even a bit cold. And the ending! What a perfect gesture WIlliam made to show May how much he loved her, despite inadvertently contributing to the ending of her prior way of life. I will revisit this book again and again; loved the descriptions of Bath and William's estate. It was so easy to get lost in the story!
